Learn From Your Mistakes
Much has been said about the upcoming Ashes series, but in my opinion the series is already over even before it started.
Injury has decimated the English side to the point where two of their main members, Michael Vaughn and Simon Jones won’t be playing till at least next year. Yet still the English selectors have gambled on injured players for the biggest battle in English cricket. Up to 5 members of the Ashes squad are under injury clouds. Ashly Giles hasn’t played for nearly 1 year while Jimmy Anderson and Liam Plunkett have also been out for quite a while. Flintoff has been named captain and he hasn’t played for the last few months along with Steve Harmison.
The question begs to be asked, why don’t the English selectors learn from their previous mistakes? In the previous Ashes series in Australia, the English side was devastated by injury and the series became a farce towards the end. It didn’t help the development of their younger players and they couldn’t make a test go for longer than 3 days (apart from the last test which they won).
Also, Giles is my no means the world class spinner that England so desperately needed. Although Monty Panesar is by no means world class yet, he is well on the way their and a much more effective bowler than Giles. His fielding and batting might not be of Giles’s standards yet but he is in there to bowl and his batting and fielding exploits might be quickly forgotten if he does the job which he is meant to, pick up big Australian scalps.
The Ashes is like war and injured players simply just will not last. So why are the English selectors giving Australia a head start in winning back the trophy England worked so hard to win?
